What is EMP and what are EMP Bags?
EMP or Electro Magnetic Pulse is also referred to as transient electromagnetic disturbance. This is basically a short burst of electromagnetic energy but it is something that shouldn’t be underestimated. The pulse has originated from natural occurrence and also, this can be manmade and might occur as an electric, radiated, conducted electric current or magnetic field all of which will depend on source.
In most cases, EMP is creating disruptive or damaging interference to our electronic devices and equipment. At higher energy levels, powerful EMPs similar to lightning strike is more than enough to lay destruction to physical objects like aircraft structures, buildings and so on. One of the significant branches of EMC or Electromagnetic compatibility engineering is the management of its effect. In reality, EMPs are also used by the military nowadays by weaponizing its effect.
This is the time when Faraday cage was invented. It was actually named after Michael Faraday and it’s a type of device that’s intended to provide protection on electronic devices from any sort of electromagnetic radiation. The cage functions by laying the non conductive and conductive layers that creates a shielding effect for items that are stored in the cage and also, to protect it from radiation. Though it sounds a bit complex, anyone can make their very own Faraday cage using just an aluminum foil.

Step number 1. Wrap your electronic device in plastic layer – wrap the device inside a plastic wrap or put it in the plastic bag. What this will do is establish a barrier between conductive aluminum layer and the device. Aside from protecting your device from EMP, this can protect it as well from water.
Step number 2. Cover every inch of your device with aluminum foil – in this case, the aluminum foil serve as a conducting layer which is the reason why it should be done. Make it a point that the aluminum foil has no tears or gaps otherwise, it won’t be that effective. Ideally, use your hands to mold the foil around your device. This act as the first 3 layers of aluminum foil.
Step number 3. Alternate the aluminum foil and plastic – as much as possible, put three layers of aluminum foil. Maximize the protection it brings by adding plastics in between layers. By doing so, it is going to create an alternating layer of both conductive and non-conductive materials and protect your device from electromagnetic radiation.
